About this Event
IN-PERSON Girls into Coding! At GOOD HOTEL, LONDON!

GIRLS! THE TECH COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU! THIS EVENT IS ORGANISED ESPECIALLY FOR YOU! COME AND JOIN US AND GET INVOLVED!

I am delighted to invite you to our IN-PERSON "Girls Into Coding " event! It's a free event. Choose 1 of 4 exciting workshops. There will also be lightning talks to inspire & encourage girls aged 11 -14 to get involved in tech. Each participant can only book one workshop because they will run simultaneously.

You will be able to explore coding activities, coding, robotics, electronics, and physical computing using the Raspberry Pi, the Micro: bit and the Jetson Nano. This is a fantastic opportunity to use Python, Micropython (text-based language), and Microsoft Makecode while getting some hands-on making time.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTION READ CAREFULLY:

If you book more than one ticket per participant, your booking will be automatically cancelled.

Please note that as this is a small collaborative event it may be necessary to move one of your daughters to a different workshop to balance out the number of participants in each workshop.

Please do not register your daughter for a workshop she has already participated in or your ticket will be automatically canceled.

WORKSHOPS:

Workshop #1: Remote Hands (Age 11 to 14)

Build a remote-controlled robotic hand! Add sensors to a glove, write code to send the sensor readings wirelessly to the robot hand. Then write code to move the fingers on the hand. In this collaborative activity, the girls will work in pairs.

We will pair the girls up. One will work on the hand, the other the glove. Or they can work together. They don't need to sign up together.

Workshop #2: Grabber Robot With Micro:bit (For Ages 11 to 14)

Build a robot powered by the Microbit that can be used as a grabber.

You will build the robot, adding different components, and wiring it all up. Then program the robot using Microsoft MakeCode.

Experience: Basic working knowledge of block-based code but beginners are welcome!

Workshop #3: Train Your Robot to Dance with You (age 12-14)

After building a mini robot incorporating an NVIDIA Jetson Nano, you will use Machine Learning (a form of Artificial Intelligence (AI)) to teach your robot how to dance with you. You’ll learn about machine learning, coding with Python, and some new dance moves!

The girls must be between 12 and 14 to attend this workshop

Workshop #4: Exploring Motors & Sound using the Microbit! (For Ages 11 to 14)

A super fun activity to measure volume and display it with a motor. We’re going to be doing some basic Python programming in this activity. You also have the opportunity to use the make code block-based programming language. So whatever your level, you have lots of options!

LIGHTNING TALKS:

Harpreet Dulai - "The curse of ‘Not Enough’"

From the age of 12 I have always been drawn to the technology industry. It gave me a sense of curiosity and the view of unlimited access for future growth. Knowing the Industry I wanted to explore helped forge my education path. I went to College, University and graduated in 2015 with a BSc in Computer Forensics & Security. I shortly after went into a full-time tech job which started off my career.

Now having navigated the Tech Industry for over 12+ years, my passions, and motivations stem from bringing awareness to diversity and inclusion challenges through mentoring & coaching individuals, to build their personal growth plans. I understand what it means to not fit in as a young Asian female in the Digital Workplace and enjoy lending my voice by sharing my knowledge, insights and lived experiences to raise awareness and confidence.
