——— GIRL GROUP (UK)
FR/

Consider the girl group: a symbol of pop culture, from riot grrrls to R&B trios and glamorous dance acts. Historically, however, girl groups have often been shaped by men and the music industry. What happens when a girl group is created by women themselves?
That story begins in Liverpool with Katya, Maria, Thea, Mia and Lil. The five met while studying at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and have lived together ever since. Four are from Oslo, while Lil comes from Yorkshire. Bringing diverse musical influences, they bonded over a shared frustration with the music industry’s male-dominated culture and formed Girl Group.
The name embraces and challenges traditional industry-made girl groups while creating a collaborative space for women in music. Their goal is for every part of the creative process to be led by women, from songwriting to production and visuals.
Feeling excluded from studio environments, the members began producing music together, developing their skills and creative independence. The result is a confident six-track debut EP released through Boys Boys Boys and Polydor.
The EP explores themes of womanhood, friendship and societal expectations. “Flink Pike” critiques the pressure placed on young women to be perfect. “Yay Saturday” celebrates friendship and the messiness of growing up. “Your Fantasy” challenges the male gaze, while “Man-Made Girlbands” questions industry stereotypes. “Shut Your Mouth Sometimes” pushes back against unwanted male advice, and “BFF4EAE” closes with a message of female solidarity.
The band’s friendship is central to their music. Everyday moments, inside jokes and shared experiences became lyrical inspiration. Although each member has distinct musical influences—from jazz and alternative pop to post-punk and classical training—they have developed a collective creative language.
Unlike many groups, Girl Group writes and produces collaboratively. Every member contributes equally, shaping the songs, lyrics and overall vision. What began as a passion project has evolved into a creative safe space where experimentation and mutual support thrive.
For Girl Group, femininity is not something to hide but a source of strength. They prioritise working with women across all creative roles and see the project as part of a wider movement supporting female artists and creatives.
With their debut EP, live performances and future recordings already underway, Girl Group continues to build a community rooted in collaboration, vulnerability and empowerment. Their music celebrates the feminine experience while creating space for joy, solidarity and self-expression.
