Gijs Idema (1996) is a guitarist and composer based in Amsterdam. His first encounter with the guitar was at the age of eleven when he heard Jimi Hendrix. After having classical guitar lessons he developed a deep interest in jazz and improvised music. In his music Gijs aims to have a wide spectrum of sound where there is room for the most diverse influences from all kinds of musical genres. Gijs has been leading his own trio (Gijs Idema Trio) for more than a decade, establishing a unique sound as a guitar-trio together with bassist Cas Jiskoot and drummer Tim Hennekes. Other ensembles where Gijs is part of include the Idema/Serierse Quartet, N∆BOU, The DutchBrewHouse and the William Barrett Band.
Gijs studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Manhattan School of Music with a.o. Jim McNeely, Reinier Baas and Jesse van Ruller. His latest project Time-Lapse is currently in the works, with a dream line-up including Ben van Gelder and Ella Zirina. A band with two saxophonists, two guitars, bass and drums. Gijs released a variety of records with DOX Records; most recently 'Serenade in Blue' (2025) with the Idema/Serierse Quartet, ‘Cloud Studies’ (2022) and before that ‘Motus’ (2020), which was nominated for an Edison Award. Gijs also released two solo records: ‘Marking Time’ (2020) and ‘Shaping Time’ (2021) of which the last one features Gijs' compositions for string quartet and guitar. Some of the venues/festivals Gijs has played in the last years include: North Sea Jazz Festival, Flagey (BE), Edinburgh Jazz & Blues (SCO), Manchester Jazz Festival (UK), Théâtre Victor Hugo Bagneux (FR), Batavierhuis (IDN), Transition Festival, Bimhuis, LantarenVenster and Paradox.
