Nach dem Oscar-Erfolg für “Drive My Car” haben sich die Multi-Instrumentalistin und Komponistin Eiko Ishibashi und der Filmemacher Ryūsuke Hamaguchi für die neue Film Performance “Gift” erneut zusammengefunden. Gemeinsam präsentieren CTM Festival und HAU Hebbel am Ufer diese einmalige Performance erstmals in Berlin. “Gift” vereint Live-Konzert und Film und entstand parallel zu Hamaguchi’s aktuellem Film “Evil Does Not Exist”. Beide Werke basieren auf denselben Bildern und dem gleichen Script, verfolgen dennoch unterschiedliche Ansätze. Wärend “Evil Does Not Exist” als Spielfilm im letzten Jahr den großen Preis der Jury bei den Internationalen Filmfestspielen von Venedig gewann, entstand “Gift” parallel als separater Stummfilm speziell für das Zusammenspiel mit Ishibashis live Soundtrack-Performance.
“Gift”, bei dem Ryūsuke für Drehbuch und Regie verantwortlich war, spielt im Dorf Mizubiki in Nagano, nahe Tokyo, gelegen auf einem Plateau und reich an ursprünglicher Natur. Protagonist Takumi und seine Tochter Hanna, leben, wie ihre Familie seit Generationen, ein einfaches Leben im Einklang mit der Natur. Die dörfliche Gemeinschaft wird durch den Zuzug neuer Bewohner*innen zunehmend mit den Herausforderungen der Moderne konfrontiert. Im Verlaufe dieser Entwicklungen wird der Plan einer Event-Agentur zur Errichtung eines Luxus-Campingplatzes in unmittelbarer Nähe zu Takumi’s Haus bekannt. Das Vorhaben, die anfallenden Abwässer in naheliegende Gewässer abzuleiten, gefährdet die Trinkwasserressourcen des Dorfes, sorgt für Aufruhr und bedroht die ruhige Lebensweise der Dorfgemeinschaft. Als Gegenstück zu “Evil Does Not Exist” entwickelt “Gift” trotz desselben kinematografischen Ausgangsmaterials und gleichen Narrativs im Zusammenklang mit Ishibashis emotional aufgelader Live-Performance eine eigenständige Perspektive auf das gemeinsame Grundthema, den Dissens und die unausweichlichen Ungleichheiten in den Beziehungen der Menschen zur Natur.
Das Spektrum in dem Eiko Ishibashi seit weit über einer Dekade zwischen den Stilen changiert erstreckt sich von Kammer-Pop, über Musique Concrète, Improv-Jazz, Prog bis hin zu Noise. Vielfach arbeitet sie mit herausragenden internationalen Künstler*innen zusammen, wie u.a. mit Jim O’Rourke, Keiji Haino, Charlemagne Palestine, Merzbow, Giovanni Di Domenico oder Phew. 2016 schuf sie ihre erste Filmkomposition für “The Albino’s Trees” und feierte 2021 mit dem Soundtrack für Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s Oscar prämierten Film “Drive My Car” einen großen Erfolg.
Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, Absolvent der Graduate School of Film and New Media der Tokyo University of Arts, erhielt bereits 2008 große Beachtung für seine Abschlussarbeit “Passion” bei japanischen Filmfestivals. Sein Film “Happy Hour” (2015) wurde mit diversen Preisen bei internationalen Festivals bedacht. “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy” (2021) gewann den Silbernen Bären bei der Berlinale. “Drive My Car” (2021) erreichte international Anerkennung und wurde u.a. mit dem Preis für das Beste Drehbuch beim 74. Film Festival in Cannes und mit dem Oscar für den besten Internationalen Film ausgezeichnet. Sein jüngster Film “Evil Does Not Exist” (2023) gewann den Silbernen Löwen beim Filmfestival in Venedig.

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Eiko Ishibashi and filmmaker Ryūsuke Hamaguchi have teamed up once again on new film performance “Gift”, following their successful collaboration on the Oscar-winning international feature film “Drive My Car”. This unique performance is presented by CTM Festival and HAU Hebbel am Ufer. “Gift” is both a live performance and film created in parallel to Hamaguchi’s recent feature film “Evil Does Not Exist”– with both works using the same footage and scenario, yet applying a different approach. While “Evil Does Not Exist” was created as a classic feature film for cinematic release and won the Grand Jury Prize at last year’s Venice International Film Festival, the companion piece “Gift” was crafted as a separate silent film meant for live soundtrack performance by Ishibashi.
Written and directed by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, “Gift” is set in Mizubiki Village in Nagano, a town located on a plateau rich in nature not so far from Tokyo. Takumi and his daughter Hana, who have lived there for generations, lead a modest life, following the cycle of nature. Their small community is increasingly challenged by a steady flow of new arrivals. One day, a plan is hatched by an entertainment agency to build a glamping site near Takumi’s house. The discovery that they intend to discharge sewage into the village water source causes unrest in the village, disrupting the community’s calm way of life. A counterpart to Evil Does Not Exist, “Gift” offers an alternative perspective on disharmony and inevitable imbalances in man’s relationship to nature by using the same material and story, but creating a distinct, emotionally charged experience enhanced through Ishibashi’s live performance.
Eiko Ishibashi has been fusing styles and genres for over a decade now, from chamber pop and musique concrète to jazz improv, prog, and noise. She has collaborated with international artists such as Jim O’Rourke, Keiji Haino, Charlemagne Palestine, Merzbow, Giovanni Di Domenico, Phew, and many others. In 2016, she made her debut as a film composer with the score for “The Albino’s Trees”, before going on to write the music for Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Oscar-winning film “Drive My Car” in 2021.
Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, an alumnus of the Graduate School of Film and New Media at the Tokyo University of Arts, started to garner international recognition with his 2008 graduate film “Passion” at film festivals both in Japan and abroad. His feature film “Happy Hour” (2015) was honoured with multiple awards at international festivals. His film “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy” (2021) won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale. “Drive My Car” (2021) also received widespread recognition, including the award for Best Screenplay at the 74th Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. His recent film Evil Does Not Exist(2023) was awarded with the Silver Lion, the Grand Prize of The Jury, at Venice Film Festival.
