About Steve Nallon's Ghost Stories

Comedy writer, actor and founding Spitting Image cast member Steve Nallon presents twelve Spooky Tales of Supernatural Strangeness ...and Weirdly Wonderful Goings On at Books on the Rise!

Steve Nallon's Ghost Stories is a darkly humorous collection of twelve ghost stories for grown-ups offering modern takes on the classic British supernatural tradition - including:*

There's a tale with a plan to expose fraudulent clairvoyants that leads to unexpectedly grave consequences.

* A Gothic horror featuring the biblical Witch of Endor.

* Lady Thatcher a-haunting Downing Street and freaking out recent prime ministers, including the present incumbent, Sir Keir Starmer.

* A M**der mystery set in an old manor house where a symposium on the Victorian ghost tale is taking place.

* A creepy Halloween homage to M.R. James.

* A laugh-out-loud farce involving a frolicsome Hattie Jacques taking up ghostly residence in the downstairs toilet of two gay bears.

* Plus Christmas angels, unaccountable shadows and a theatre ghost!

All twelve stories have lavish, full colour digital paintings by Spitting Image artist and illustrator, Scott Brooker.

Praise for Steve Nallon's Ghost Stories

‘These ghost tales are vivid, grotesque, funny and curiously believable. Compelling reading for the young, old and in-betweens... The Oath of Aesculapius is a lovely, twisty, gothic horror story about a dining club – think Bullingdon – where rich men eat rich food and – hallelujah! – get their just desserts.’ Jonny Maitland, Tonight television presenter and author of the play The Last Temptation of Boris Johnson

‘These are absolute GENIUS! Perfectly formed, individually wrapped treats, to be consumed by the fireside, a large sherry in hand, the fingers of long branches scraping across a window. A mixture of Wodehouse, Conan Doyle and fresh Nallon, these spooky tales chill and thrill in equal amounts.’ James Dreyfus, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and The Thin Blue Line

‘With a fine grasp of character and idiolect, Steve Nallon conjures up worlds with a great sense of authenticity and an even greater sense of imagination... Steve has an uncanny ability to find fresh and disturbing images – of life and death – in what we think are familiar worlds.’ Alistair McGowan, BAFTA winning comedian and actor

About Steve Nallon

Steve began as a performer in 1976 on the Northern Working Men's Club Circuit in his home county of Yorkshire. After gaining a degree in Drama and English at the University of Birmingham, Steve became a foundering member of the television series SPITTING IMAGE, where he provided the voices of many of the programme's iconic characters. Steve's current work as a voice actor covers animation, film dubbing, audio books, commercials and video games.

Steve is an established writer and author with a considerable body of credits ranging from BBC radio plays and comedy series to articles and columns, plus numerous contributions to books and periodicals. His novels THE TIME THAT NEVER WAS (2022) and THE TIME THEY SAVED TOMORROW (2024) in THE SWIDGERS young adult book series, both received warm critical receptions, and DESTINATION TIME TRAVEL (2023), an exploration of time travel tales in film and television written with Dick Fiddy of the British Film Institute, has proved a big hit with sci-fi fans.

Steve's acting credits include Jacque CARNIVAL (Barbican Theatre, London), John Bland in CHINESE WHISPERS (Greenwich Theatre), Kenneth Williams in SCREAMING QUEENS (Waterloo East), Field Marshall Lord Montgomery and Sir John Gielgud in the documentary comedy IN THE LIFE (St James Theatre, now The Other Palace), the Narrator in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW (Leicester Haymarket) and Roy Barraclough/Cissie in CISSIE AND ADA (The Lowry and national tour). Film and television acting credits include THE REFUGE, 51 DEGREES NORTH, THE GIRL WITH BRAINS IN HER FEET, JONATHAN CREEK (BBC) and FRANKIE AND JOHNNY (BBC).

With his many years experience as an academic at the University of Birmingham, Steve is able to offer insightful talks and lectures, especially on film, performance and theatre history. In 2023 Steve gave the keynote speech TELLING THE TALES OF TIME at the British Film Institute which launched their DESTINATION TIME TRAVEL season. Steve’s STORY CRAFT lectures and workshops on the key elements of storytelling have proved popular in schools and colleges.

Steve works as well as voice coach, especially where actors are asked to play real life characters. For colleges and universities, Steve offers a variety of practical workshops on performance and writing, notably in the areas of comedy, voice and creative thinking.

Steve Nallon is a member of Actors' Equity, The Royal Television Society, The British Academy of Film and Television, The Society of Authors and The Writers' Guild.
