Ghost Sign Walking Tour: Brick and Neon 8/1
About this Event
The beauty of ghost signs on brick or the patina of a forgotten neon sign has to be seen in the broad daylight. This tour follows a route to discover ghost signs and vintage neon signs along the corridors of Polk, Larkin, Hyde, and Leavenworth Streets in San Francisco. There are so many vintage signs in San Francisco, in this neighborhood it takes 1.5 hours tours to feature these remarkable signs and their backstories.
This afternnon tour is only given a few time in the summer months. It features vintage neon signs and ghost signs (those faded historic hand painted signs on the sides of buildings or on store fronts that advertise a product or business that is long gone). You will see a rich collection of photographs maps, and historic research on this tour led by hosts Al Barna and Randall Ann Homan, SF Neon preservationists, inspired by our friend Kasey Smith's amazing SF Ghost Sign Mapping Project . Tour includes histories of unique small businesses that once thrived in our city plus the legacy businesses that have survived against considerable odds.
