Gettysburg: 160th Anniversary Film History Livestream
For the upcoming 160th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) join us for an online/virtual history program featuring the film "Gettysburg".
The 1993 Gettysburg film is epic at 4 hours and 15 minutes long, and will therefore be divided into two segments, with each segment being shown twice, on different dates.
The initial portion of each film program (approximately 30-40 minutes) will be a brief overview of that day’s segment (first or second) of the film "Gettysburg", including its historical context, plot summary, things to look for, accuracy, etc.
The second portion of each program will be a full screening of that day’s segment (first or second) of the "Gettysburg" film (approximately 135 minutes for each segment).
During the film we invite you to participate in a discussion of the film with your fellow participants via Zoom.

The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1–3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In the battle, Union Major General George Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, halting Lee's invasion of the North. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point due to the Union's decisive victory and concurrence with the Siege of Vicksburg.
Between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers from both armies were casualties in the three-day battle, the most costly in US history. On November 19, President Lincoln used the dedication ceremony for the Gettysburg National Cemetery to honor the fallen Union soldiers and redefine the purpose of the war in his historic Gettysburg Address.
Gettysburg is a 1993 American epic war film about the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. Written and directed by Ronald F. Maxwell, the film was adapted from the 1974 historical novel The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. It features an ensemble cast, including Tom Berenger as James Longstreet, Jeff Daniels as Joshua Chamberlain, Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee, Stephen Lang as George Pickett, and Sam Elliott as John Buford.
Originally filmed as a miniseries for TNT, Gettysburg received a limited theatrical release from New Line Cinema under the direction of Ted Turner, who owned both entities. At 254 minutes (4 hours and 14 minutes), it is one of the longest films released by a major film studio in the United States. It received positive reviews from critics, but grossed only $12.7 million on a $20 million budget. It was however considered a hit regardless, due to its immediate TNT premiere ratings success, and subsequent home video sales.
