For our very final Get Hip night I'm pleased to say that we will be rounding off the club night with a welcome return for The Voo-Dooms who first played the Get Hip club night at our 4th anniversary back in March 2020. Doors open at 8pm till midnight and tickets are £5 advance + booking fee (£8 on the door). The Voo-Dooms play garage music with a ghoulish edge! they have been described as something sounding like Tommy Steele being backed by the Cramps! with 3 vinyl album releases in 6 years - 'Destination Doomsville' (2018), 'Step Inside The Doom' (2020) and 'Attack Of The Voo-Dooms' (2023) the band press on! writing all their own material and not playing it safe when it comes to just being another garage band wearing stripy tops, chelsea boots and bones around their necks! you will be Doomed when you hear the Voo-Doom beat, some would say you might get the gravedigger blues if you miss them!
Dan Whaley – Lead Guitar – In the 1980’s Dan was playing Guitar for young teenage garage trash band The Shockwaves, into the 90’s he could be seen as the only male in the snazzy The Diaboliks! he also plays in Instrumental band The Charles Napiers as well as The Dustaphonics from time to time.
Dan joined the Voo-Dooms in late 2019 and is a master of the twang with a nonchalant swagger!
Bruce Brand – Bass Guitar – Bruce really needs no introduction to the people who really know! back in the late 1970’s he was playing lead guitar in The Pop Rivets with a Mr B Childish before moving on in the early 80’s switching to the Drums to be the beat keeper of Thee Milkshakes! Bruce then decided to keep busy over the years in Thee Headcoates, Thee Mighty Caesars, The Dustaphonics, Hipbone Slim & The Kneetremblers, Holly Golightly and to this day he plays with top Garage band The Masonics. For the Voo-Dooms (Bruce is a original member) he plays a mean old Bass guitar and plays it rather well!
Mick Cocksedge = Vocals/ Rhythm Guitar – Mick started out back in the 1990’s singing with garage rock ‘n’ roll band The Untamed (releasing two 45’s) before then moving on to One Track Mind a neo Rockabilly band that released a CD album produced by Boz Boorer and a 3 track 45 rpm before calling it a day! Getting bored Mick quickly put together to Country/Rockabilly band The Cordwood Draggers who went on to tour the US three times and released 4 albums during the early 2000’s this sadly came to an end and Mick did nothing for a few years before starting Dead Bone Ramblers a three piece Rockabilly combo with no drums, they played all over europe before again all the wheels fell off and the band came apart.
Move onto 2017 and the idea of The Voo-Dooms was born and Mick is sole writer of the band and continues to write songs with originality and also smoething he likes to call ‘A Melody’!
Mark Braby – Drums – Mark is the newest recruit to the Dooms and joined in late 2021 and played his first show with the boys on the 4th Feb at The New Cross Inn! Mark has played in The Charles Napiers and also with punk’s Vic Goddard. A fine master of the traps and proved his worth when recording 6 tracks for the new Voo-Dooms release with very little time to practice but ‘Smashed it out of the park’ to coin a phrase!
Advance tickets are £5 + booking fee (£8 on the door).
As well as the band you'll have the Get Hip DJ crew spinning the vinyl with a mix of sounds, everything from 60s Soul, Latin, R&B, Hammond Grooves, Garage & Psych, Funk, Ska and other cool sounds. Doors open at 8pm (band on around 9pm) and the music goes on till midnight. Come and join us for the final Get Hip night.
