This performance will be a rehearsed reading of this lively, witty two-hander that traverses the lives and love story of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, one of the great lesbian love stories of the 20th century.
The play begins after the death of Gertrude Stein when her ghost returns to Alice B. Toklas. As they flit across time the genesis and development of their relationship is richly portrayed using text from Stein’s writings, letters and interviews and gradually reveals the inner workings of their relationship. Author Win Wells captures the feeling, art, music and literature of Paris in those years between world wars, when Pablo and Ernest and Henri and all of Gertrude’s friends spent their free time in the great writer’s salon.
