Gerald Horne - "The Capital of Slavery: Washington, DC 1800 to 1865

Although 1776 and the revolt against British rule is thought to have planted the seeds of abolitionism, the fact is that the resultant Constitution protected the institution of slavery, as the White House, the Supreme Court, and Congress were all dominated by enslavers. In his new book, Gerald Horne revises the traditional understanding of antebellum U.S. History as he paints a heroic picture of the fight for freedom in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Join us for a conversation about how these origins of DC echo today as the nation’s capital is occupied by armed soldiers and patrolled by immigration agents intent on deporting those deemed “illegal.”
