Bataille – et monstrøst univers
Universet er et monster af energi, og vi må selv blive monstrøse, hvis vi skal undslippe hovedets reduktion af verden til blot og bar ressourcer og ting. Georges Bataille (1897-1962) skrev i forlængelse af Nietzsche og Marquis de Sade og i dialog med surrealismen og eksistentialismen om nødvendigheden af et erotisk og poetisk verdensforhold som vrister sig fri af rationalitetens og hovedets tvang. Han stiftede det hemmelige selskab Acéphale (hovedløs) med et hovedløst monster som galionsfigur. Filosofferne Stuart Kendall (US) og Jon Auring Grimm (DK) introducerer til Batailles radikale filosofi og litteratur, herunder den berømte og berygtede Historien om Øjet og det hemmelige selskab, Acéphale.

Stuart Kendall er anerkendt Batailleekspert, uafhængig forsker, forfatter, oversætter og redaktør med speciale i det tyvende århundredes franske filosofi, litteratur og avantgardetænkning. Han har oversat flere af Batailles hovedværker og skrevet indgående om hans filosofi og litteratur samt om avantgarden generelt. Blandt hans værker er biografien Georges Bataille, The Ends of Art and Design samt oversættelser af Gilgamesh og Bataille-værkerne On Nietzsche, Inner Experience, Guilty og mange flere.
Jon Auring Grimm har skrevet ph.d.-afhandling om Batailles kosmiske vision med titlen: Celestial Bodies – A movement toward a general ecology and a new existential and cosmic outlook on nature in accord with the moving thought of Georges Bataille. Han har været medarrangør af den internationale konference BatailleNow i 2023 i Athen og har skrevet flere artikler om Bataille, økologi, erotik og poesi.
Georges Bataille (1897–1962) var en radikal fransk forfatter og filosof, hvis arbejde spænder over litteratur, filosofi, antropologi og mystik. Han udforskede temaer som overskridelse, erotik, død og det hellige og pressede tænkningen ud til dens yderste grænser – hinsides rationalitet og nytte. Han er bedst kendt for sin stærkt transgressive og erotiske roman Historien om øjet, samt for sine mere teoretiske værker Den forbandede del og Erotismen. Han har haft stor indflydelse på danske digtere som Inger Christensen og Per Højholt, og i 2016 lavede teaterkollektivet LOGEN en sanselig performativ fortolkning af Historien om øjet.

Bataille – A Monstrous Universe
The universe is a monster of energy, and we ourselves must become monstrous if we are to escape the head’s reduction of the world to mere resources and things. Writing in the wake of Nietzsche and the Marquis de Sade, and in dialogue with Surrealism and Existentialism, Georges Bataille (1897–1962) argued for the necessity of an erotic and poetic relationship with the world—one that wrests itself free from the constraints of rationality and the tyranny of the head. He founded the secret society Acéphale (“headless”), whose emblem was a headless monster. Philosophers Stuart Kendall (US) and Jon Auring Grimm (DK) introduce Bataille’s radical philosophy and literature, including the famous and infamous Story of the Eye and the secret society Acéphale.

Stuart Kendall is a renowned Bataille scholar, independent researcher, author, translator, and editor specialising in twentieth-century French philosophy, literature, and avant-garde thought. He has translated several of Bataille’s major works and written extensively on his philosophy and literature, as well as on the avant-garde more broadly. His works include the biography Georges Bataille, The Ends of Art and Design, and translations of Gilgamesh and Bataille’s On Nietzsche, Inner Experience, Guilty, and many others.
Jon Auring Grimm has written a PhD dissertation on Bataille’s cosmic vision entitled Celestial Bodies – A Movement toward a General Ecology and a New Existential and Cosmic Outlook on Nature in Accord with the Moving Thought of Georges Bataille. He co-organised the international BatailleNow conference in Athens in 2023 and has written several articles on Bataille, ecology, eroticism, and poetry.
Georges Bataille (1897–1962) was a radical French writer and philosopher whose work spans literature, philosophy, anthropology, and mysticism. He explored themes such as transgression, eroticism, death, and the sacred, pushing thought to its outermost limits—beyond rationality and utility. He is best known for his highly transgressive and erotic novel Story of the Eye, as well as for his more theoretical works The Accursed Share and Erotism. He has had a significant influence on Danish poets such as Inger Christensen and Per Højholt, and in 2016 the theatre collective LOGEN created a sensuous performative interpretation of Story of the Eye.
