The 41st annual Silha Lecture features Leita Walker, litigator and partner with Ballard Spahr’s Media and Entertainment Law Group
About this Event

For nearly 20 years, Walker has defended speech in libel litigation; aided news organizations to obtain access to governmental and judicial records, and helped journalists and whistleblowers in high-profile and politically charged situations. One of the nation’s leading experts on cameras in the courtroom, Walker represented a large media coalition in efforts to gain courtroom access to the trial of Derek Chauvin for the M**der of George Floyd. Walker's efforts have led the Minnesota Supreme Court to expand its rule governing cameras in state courts, and she currently works to achieve similar measures in the federal court system. In addition, she helps journalists prepare to cover political demonstrations and similar events where their constitutional rights as well as their safety may come under threat, and works to hold officials accountable when journalists are harassed or injured.

Walker’s many honors include recognition by Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America, the National Press Photographers Association, and the Minnesota Coalition on Government Information. She speaks at numerous conferences, and has written articles for a variety of law publications including Communications Lawyer and Bloomberg Law.

The 2026 Silha Lecture is sponsored by the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law which is based at the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota, in partnership with the University of Minnesota Law School.
