Shaftoe Crags are composed of coarse sandstones, deposited by a fault bounded river channel that cut through Carboniferous sediments. A variety of sedimentary features are visible within the exposures including soft sediment deformation structures and cross-stratification.
Ice has left its mark on the landscape carving deep clefts through the sandstone and the meltwaters have formed some unusual microchannels.
Features such as the Devilβs Punchbowl and a cave will be explored along the route. Spectacular views. This roughly circular walk is around 2.5 miles long along paths, over rough, and in places, boggy ground.
Essential equipment:
Sturdy footwear, outdoor clothing, lunch.
