“Quite a character.” Tom McVie was the last coach of the World Hockey Association Winnipeg Jets, leading them to the final AVCO Cup, and their first coach in the NHL. He had the high of a championship followed by the low of a record that will never be broken: going winless in thirty consecutive games. All the way through, he never lost his sense of humour.
In the midst of the 30-game winless streak, McVie continued to do his weekly radio show. He’d even reward the trivia question winners. First prize was a pair of Jets tickets. Second prize? Four tickets. McVie spent twenty years as a player in the minors, twenty years as a coach and assistant coach—including coaching three expansion teams—and another twenty-five years as a scout.
In The Funniest Man in Hockey, longtime journalist Geoff Kirbyson shares the life of one of hockey’s most beloved coaches and personalities. Through interviews with family, friends, players, and colleagues, Kirbyson explores McVie’s life dedicated to professional hockey. Most of all, we see how Tom’s kindness, humour, and spark lit up every room.
Geoff Kirbyson is a veteran journalist who spent much of his career at the Winnipeg Free Press. Today, he is the publisher of Manitoba Inc. magazine and co-host of the Manitoba Inc. podcast, one of the top 20 business podcasts in Canada. He has also written for Canadian Business Magazine, The Hockey News, and numerous trade publications. He coached minor hockey for many years and is a stay-at-home defenceman on The Sofa Kings.
