Genetics and Bioinformatics Research Program

The Genetics and Bioinformatics course is designed to introduce middle and high school students to the fascinating world of genetics and the use of bioinformatics tools to analyze genetic data Through this 12-week journey, students will explore the principles that govern heredity, genetic variation, and molecular biology, while learning to apply their knowledge towards solving a real-world problem as a capstone project.

Course Duration: 12 weeks

Week 1-2: Weeks 1-2: Foundations of Genetics

• DNA structure and Central Dogma
• Mendelian genetics and inheritance patterns
• Genetic mutations and their effects
• Introduction to Punnett squares and genetic probability

Weeks 3-4: Genetic Variation and Disorders

• Types of genetic mutations (point mutations, insertions, deletions)
• Genetic disorders (e.g., cystic fibrosis, Huntington’s)
• Pedigree charts and tracing genetic inheritance
• Sex-linked inheritance and genetic counseling

Weeks 5-6: Introduction to Bioinformatics

• Overview of bioinformatics and its role in genetics
• DNA sequencing and genetic databases (GenBank, BLAST)
• Introduction to bioinformatics tools and basic sequence alignment
• Using online databases to explore gene sequences

Weeks 7-8: Genome Analysis and Applications

• Using genome browsers (UCSC Genome Browser, Ensembl)
• Understanding genetic mutations and CRISPR
• Applications of gene editing in medicine and agriculture
• Personalized medicine and pharmacogenomics

Weeks 9-10: Biotechnology and Ethics

• Genetic engineering (GMOs, gene therapy)
• Ethical considerations of CRISPR and gene editing
• The role of biotechnology in medicine and agriculture
• Case studies on the societal impacts of genetic engineering

Weeks 11-12: Capstone Projects and Presentations

• Project development, data analysis, and interpretation
• Presenting scientific research and bioinformatics findings
• Future trends in genetics and bioinformatics (career paths)
• Capstone project presentations and peer reviews

This course offers a unique blend of theoretical learning and practical experience, making complex scientific concepts both accessible and engaging for students interested in genetics.

Dr. Roopa Holehonnur has over 8 years of research experience in understanding the molecular basis of Neuropsychiatric and Neurodevelopmental disorders. She currently works as a Scientist with Dr. Laura Lavery at Rice University, Houston to discover novel therapies for patients with neurodevelopmental disorders. Following her master’s and doctoral degree in Neuroscience from University of Texas at Dallas in 2016, she completed her first postdoctoral training at UT Southwestern Medical Center under the mentorship of Dr. Craig Powell.

She then completed her second postdoctoral training at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston under the mentorship of Dr. Huda Zoghbi who has received many accolades including the Breakthrough prize, Brain Prize and the Kavli Prize. Roopashri has over 6 years of experience with teaching and mentoring students.

At The University of Texas at Dallas, she coached students on research design, planning and execution in addition to assisting professors with lectures and evaluations. As an experienced biomedical researcher who is also passionate about teaching, she can effectively coach students. Her diverse educational background combined with her mentoring experiences positions her well to turn her passion into practice. During her free time, Roopashri enjoys photography, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Dr. Vitaliy Bondar is a seasoned scientist with an intense focus on unraveling the mysteries of the human brain. With over a decade of experience in neuroscience and genetics, he primarily focuses on discovering treatments for complex diseases like Parkinson's. Having worked at esteemed institutions such as REGENXBIO Inc. and Denali Therapeutics Inc., Vitaliy has led groundbreaking research initiatives aimed at developing innovative therapies for neurological disorders.

Through his research, Vitaliy has made significant strides, resulting in publications in prestigious scientific journals. Beyond his scientific endeavors, he is passionate about disseminating knowledge and mentoring aspiring scientists. He excels at translating complex scientific concepts into accessible language and guiding individuals in their academic and professional journeys. With his dedication and collaborative approach, Vitaliy continues to pave the way for the development of new treatments for neurological disorders."

Dr. Carolyn Bondar stands at the forefront of biomedical research, propelled by a dedication to nurturing scientists to realize their full potential. Trained in protein chemistry and translational neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine, Carolyn now serves as a Program Officer for the National Institutes of Health. In this role, she advocates for policies and initiatives aimed at promoting a well-trained, diverse, and robust research workforce.
