Since 1997, El Paso’s Rio Bosque Wetlands Park has been the site of a long-term effort to restore environmental conditions similar to those once found in the valley of the Rio Grande/Río Bravo before European settlement. The American beaver (Castor canadensis) was part of that environment. In the early years of the restoration work at Rio Bosque, beavers occasionally appeared during periods when water was abundant but left when that water disappeared. Starting in 2014, water became more consistently available to the park. When a beaver arrived in January 2019, it stuck around. For 3.5 years, it kept a low profile, but in June 2022 it began building multiple dams along the re-built former river channel within the park. Join us to learn more from John Sproul about the unique challenges and opportunities presented by this beaver’s role in water and ecosystem management at Rio Bosque.

Speaker biography: John Sproul is the manager of Rio Bosque Wetlands Park, a position he has held since UTEP began management of the park in 1999. Through tireless efforts, John has worked with many partners to secure water to the park for several months of each year. This has allowed vegetation to grow, recreating what the area would have looked like when the Rio Grande was a free-flowing river. A passionate birder, John co-wrote the Checklist of Birds of El Paso Co and Adjacent Areas, maintains rare bird lists for West Texas, and leads bird walks at Rio Bosque.
