After a long hiatus, we’re thrilled to be gathering in person again for our general meetings! Join us for an evening of discovery, connection, and celebration with Bill Waycott, former president of the California Native Plant Society, who recently discovered a new species of manzanita. In his talk, Bill will delve into the fascinating world of the genus Arctostaphylos—better known as manzanita. With over 60 species, all native to California, manzanitas are a prime example of nature’s ongoing evolution. Learn about the center of diversity for these plants, which stretches from the San Francisco Bay Area to Santa Barbara County, right along our central coast.
Bill will discuss:
• The amazing range of variation within manzanitas
• Why there are so many species and how they continue to hybridize
• How to identify different species and understand their unique habitats
• What the future holds for these remarkable plants
We’ll be serving a light meal of pizza and salad, so come hungry! Feel free to bring something to share if you like, but don’t worry if you can’t—we’ll have plenty for everyone.
