About this Event
Monthly reggae disco in North-East London. The night is named after sadly departed MC Earl Anthony Robinson, the voice behind classic deejay tunes such as "Drunken Master".
Our November 2024 session is very special for a number of reasons. 1) It marks 9 years of us putting this event on, 2) We're very honoured to welcome the legendary DENNIS BOVELL back for the second time, and his first appearance since we've moved to the Trades Hall, and 3) Most importantly, this is the launch party for a brand new compilation album, SUFFERER SOUNDS, which documents some of Dennis' deepest and deadliest cuts, mostly drawn from the 1976 - 1980 period and unavailable on any physical format for many years. There will be a talk with Dennis about the album, the opportunity to purchase the record and get it signed (a week before it's available in the shops), and also a DJ set from the man himself. You can also purchase the compilation alongside your ticket.
Dennis Bovell’s prolific and eclectic career encompasses a huge range of music: from dub poetry to lovers rock to post-punk to disco to pop and beyond. His production work encompasses such diverse figures as The Slits, I Roy, Maximum Joy, Fela Kuti, The Pop Group, Janet Kay, Saada Bonaire, Orange Juice, Golden Teacher, Steel Pulse and more.
This compilation focuses on the period during and immediately after Bovell’s involvement with the Jah Sufferer Sound System, digging deep to find deep cuts and lesser known versions, mainly from 76 - 80, plus a killer and lesser heard dub of the iconic “Silly Games”. Painstakingly restored and remastered at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin so that these decades old tracks sound pristine and dynamic, and sequenced to take the listener on a journey through Bovell’s production and arrangement genius.
The accompanying sleevenotes are a result of a long conversation with Dennis about this period of his life, with track-by-track recollections and fascinating biographical asides. The vinyl and CD versions feature variant artwork, each format utilising a unique photo by Syd Shelton.Proudly released on the Disciples label run by Matthew, one half of the General Echo Reggae Disco crew. He has compiled the album and will be interviewing Dennis on stage.
