RIOT (1969, directed by Buzz Kulik, 96 min., U.S.)
Gene Hackman plays Max, an ex-con with ambitions. Al Pacino plays the innocent Francis Lionel aka “The Lion,” a sailor just back from sea. The unlikely pair meet while hitch-hiking outside of San Francisco, where Max recruits The Lion two join him on a cross-country ramble, on their way to opening a carwash in Pittsburgh.
One of Hackman finest showcases, SCARECROW is full of the sort of scrappy realism people love in 1970's cinema, loaded with unglamorous locations and quirky characters. Hackman and Pacino emerge at the end as one of cinema's unforgettable screen couples. Shot by the legendary Vilmos Zsigmond (cinematographer of DELIVERANCE and THE DEER HUNTER).

The classic prison break-out film spiced with the era's spirit of protest, 1969's RIOT brings together Hackman with football legend turned actor Jim Brown. Red (Hackman) is the big cheese among the prisoners of an Arizona prison. One day guards are taken hostage in an attempt to protest prison conditions but this is only a ruse so Red can lead an inmate escape. Cully (Brown), only serving a short stint, wants no part of action but gets drawn in by the manipulative Red.
Loosely-based on an actual incident and featuring inmates of Yuma Territorial Prison, RIOT finds Hackman gaining authority as a screen presence and features one of Jim Brown most-convincing roles as the ambivalent recruit to Hackman's scheme.
