“An Exploration of Gendered and Racialized Experiences at Central State Hospital, 1877-1910”
presented by Caitlin Downey
Caitlin Downey will be joining us to present a summary of her Masters thesis “Gendered and Racialized Experiences at Central State Hospital, 1877-1910,” in which she analyzes the treatment of African American patients at the former Central State Hospital during that time period. It examines the impact of scientific racism and institutionalized sexism on female African American patients’ diagnoses, medical treatment, and outcomes and analyzes the intersection of race and gender through the study of one African American woman who was a patient at the hospital from the 1890s until her death in 1909.
