About this Event
There are few issues in contemporary America more fraught or politicized than those involving gender, identity, and children. The noise is overwhelming, the stakes are through the roof, and the conversation has collapsed. Our current obsession with gender is inversely proportional to our understanding of it.
Please join Diane Ehrensaft, PhD and Michelle Jurkiewics, PsyD at Clio’s for an honest, open, and dispassionate conversation about (and, hopefully, with!) young people and the constantly changing societal patterns and gender norms we all live with. Backed by the latest research and featuring personal stories from children, adolescents, and parents, their book Gender Explained dispels myths and addresses for the general audience the conflicting messages about gender-affirming care currently beffudling the media and befogging our social climate.
Diane Ehrensaft is a developmental and clinical psychologist whose numerous books include The Gender Creative Child and Gender Born, Gender Made. She is the cofounder and director of mental health at the Child and Adolescent Gender Center at UCSF, where she is also a professor of pediatrics.
Michelle Jurkiewicz is a licensed clinical psychologist and gender specialist in private practice in Berkeley. She was an early pioneer in the work with transgender, nonbinary and gender expansive youth. She has been providing therapeutic services to children, youth and families since 2003 and trains newer clinicians in using the Gender Affirmative Model.
