GEM North East: Climate and Education

Join GEM North East for a full day of learning and conversation on how to approach teaching and messaging around Climate change in your venue.  

 
Andy Higgs, Director at Elysium Environmental Learning, will launch the day with a brief overview of the current climate situation. He will share how climate knowledge is delivered in schools, where it fits within the curriculum and how we can support and consider these topics in our settings. He will talk about the benefits for coming together to share knowledge, experiences and ideas throughout the day. 

 
Sophie Westlake from Magna, Vindolanda will share the steps they have taken to include climate and green technologies innovatively within their formal school programme.  

 
Sara Bird from Special Collections at Newcastle University, will share her project work with Northumberland Secondary students, on climate change and countryside management, through the lens of English and Art.  

 
The Learning and Curatorial Teams from Discovery Museum will share their approach to Climate and Green technologies within their new two year programme ‘Steam to Green: The North East Energy Revolution’. Steam to Green, created in partnership with Newcastle University, explores the story of energy and the climate crisis in the North East and highlights, and celebrates, the region’s pioneering contributions to green technologies.  

 
This part of the day will be in two parts – firstly, explore the Steam to Green exhibition with the Curatorial team. During this time you will hear about the considerations taken when designing the exhibition as well as the experience of collaborating with local green sector organisations.  

 
Then, hear from the Learning team about their journey with developing and delivering climate and green technology based learning experiences for EYFS, families, home educators and school groups.  

 
The Learning Team from The Sill, Northumberland National Park Authority Sill, will then lead a practical planning session providing opportunity to reflect on your own practices and consider what steps you could take to be more climate conscious. 

 
There will be plenty of time for questions throughout the session and opportunities for conversing and practical planning. 

 
You will even get lunch, tea and biscuits provided throughout the day. 

 
All those who work or think about education or visitor engagement in a museum, gallery or heritage setting are welcome, whether you are a GEM member or not.
