"Wreck Diving with Sharks" by Mike Gerken from Evolution Underwater Imaging and Dive Travel www.evolutionunderwater.com
Bio
A native Long Islander who lived and worked in New York City, Mike Gerken left the corporate grind behind in the late 90’s to pursue a career in boating, recreational diving, journalism, documentary film making and underwater photography. Mike has travelled extensively since then living and working in numerous locations around the world. He presently works part time in Truk Lagoon, Micronesia as captain of the dive live-aboard, M/V Odyssey where he has been photographing the famed Japanese WWII wrecks for the better part of 20 years. Throughout all his journey’s Mike still favors the diving off the North Carolina Coast where marine life is abundant with the prolific and mysterious sand tiger shark being his favorite subject to photograph. After 30 years in the business Mike shares his excitement of dive travel with others who are looking for guidance to maximize their travel experience. When not working for others, he runs group dive tours through Evolution Dive Travel; a subsidiary of his photography company, Evolution Underwater Imaging LLC. Talk Description
When he first discovered the shark diving off North Carolina Coast in the late 90’s, Mike Gerken became hooked on this destination as one of his favorite in the world. Carcharias taurus or the sand tiger shark has been making the wrecks their “hang-out” for as long as divers can recall. Their numbers have arguably increased in the past 30 years making sightings of dozens or even 100 or more a common encounter. Nowhere else in the world can numbers such as this be found other than on the wrecks of North Carolina. Mike has been filming and photographing the sand tigers for more than two decades and has witnessed some interesting behaviors that are not fully understood. He will be displaying his images and sharing his favorite stories of these docile shark species at his presentation. I hope you can join him.
