“Understanding Biodiversity Using Clay Caterpillar Decoys” Peter Park/Farmingdale State College Understanding Biodiversity Using Clay Caterpillar Decoys
Community science happens when public participation is incorporated in the scientific process. The time-tested clay caterpillar decoy method is being used as community science to explore the vast biodiversity that naturally resides on the Farmingdale State College campus. This work is student-focused and culminates in teacher-student co-development of novel classroom activities focused on enhancing data literacy. This effort also incorporates the use of free online statistics web-tools, making learning stats both fun and free.
Speaker Bio: Peter J. Park, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Biology at SUNY Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale, NY. He teaches introductory biology courses in plant and animal
diversity as well as an upper-level fish biology course. He is an avid angler, enthusiastic contributor to fish-focused community science initiatives, and a developer of various educator resources ranging from evolution-based virtual labs to aquaponics applications.
