GCPH Cinema Screening: Cyrano (2021)

Joe Wright adapts Erica Schmidt's hugely successful 2018 musical version of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac. Retelling the story of a lovelorn and highly romantic soldier, whose ambitions in love are derailed by a physical impediment that makes him the object of unwanted attention. Whereas, in the original play Cyrano is cursed with a large nose, here Wright casts Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, The Station Agent) as a Cyrano who is short in stature and particularly prickly about it.

Lured into helping the inarticulate but hunky Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) woo the beautiful Roxanne (Haley Bennett), Cyrano ends up seducing Roxanne with his words and his poetry, but all for Christian's benefit. Yet will Roxanne ever see Cyrano as her true love?
