The Gilmer County Genealogical Society will hold its April meeting on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the lower level meeting room of the Gilmer County Library. Dennis C. Stewart, author and member of First Families of Gilmer County, Georgia, will present the program “The Lineage of Mountaintown’s Osborn Family.” A descendant of John Osborn and his son Reverend Nicholas Osborn, he will tell of this pioneer Gilmer County, Georgia family and their ancestors.

The history of the Osborn family of the Mountaintown community in Gilmer County, Georgia is a mosaic of color and drama. Their direct ancestors range from Kings of England to Magna Carta Barons; from owners of Plymouth Rock to Melungeon moonshiners in Virginia; and a brave Revolutionary War hero who survived as a P.O.W. in Charleston, South Carolina. Born of these historical ancestors, this Osborn family settled in the North Georgia mountains and became perhaps one of the the most well-known and influential families in Gilmer County from 1840 until the early 1900's.

Dennis Craig Stewart, a resident of Etowah, Tennessee, served for several years in the U.S. Air Force, and later became interested in genealogy and writing. He has written several award-winning books in different genres: true crime, local history, and family history, some using the pen name “Summerville Petty,” a name taken from a child’s gravestone in an old cemetery. Mr. Stewart’s books “The Real Homer Simpson,” “The ‘Suicide’ Of Lillian Hutsell,” and “Did You Hear Your Woman Scream?” are of the true crime genre; and the first 2 books won awards with the East Tennessee Historical Society.

Also winning awards with the East Tennessee Historical Society are books based on local history: “The Desecration of Eliza Leonard” and “Briar Rabbit in The Cemeteries,” Mr. Stewart’s first book which received the “Outstanding Research Award" from the society. And those wishing to learn the genealogy of Southern families, can read about them in his book “Thirty Ye Olde Tyme Families.”

Mr. Stewart’s genealogical research has been very extensive through both his DNA testing results and lineage documentation. His 2002 Family Tree DNA tests located cousins throughout the United States, and his 2017 FT Autosomal DNA test matched paternal and maternal cousins. Most recently, in 2021 he took DNA testing with DNA Consultants and those results revealed that Dennis C. Stewart has Jewish, Melungeon, Shawnee, Cherokee and Lumbee Indian admixture.

Through his dedicated research, documentation of his lineage has been proven to qualify him for membership in many societies such as The Jamestown Society (no. 7526,) The Plantagenet Society, The Somerset Chapter of Magna Carta Barons, The First Families of Tennessee, and, of course, The First Families of Gilmer County and The Gilmer County Genealogical Society.

Don’t miss Dennis Stewart’s story of his remarkable ancestors at the Gilmer County Genealogical Society’s monthly meeting on Saturday, April 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilmer County Library’s lower level meeting room. The public is invited and admission is free.
