‘A fantastic ray of moonlight; blinding brilliance;like a white scimitar upon a black ornate cushion’…
(Albert Giraud)
Pierrot Lunaire is the poet, nocturnal and ecstatic—the old jester, tired and sentimental—and the muse, deliriously moonstruck. Celebrating origins and offering vivid new perspectives, much-loved GCF artists Hebrides Ensemble and Stephanie Lamprea unite for this brilliant performance of nightmares and dreams.
Hebrides began their journey together in 1991 with Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, bringing to life the deranged clown of Albert Giraud’s pantomime poetry. For this concert in Schoenberg’s 150th anniversary year, the ensemble add a new chapter to their story by augmenting his settings with two new works. Helen Grime’s wordless Pierrot Miniatures present the protagonist’s volatile side, while the Scottish premiere of Brushstrokes of Nightmares and Dreams by rising star Electra Perivolaris sets a more ethereal tone, capturing the incandescent power of the moon. Complementing this performance, an exhibition of 21 new paintings by ‘artistic polymath’ Kirsty Matheson transforms the evening into a truly multi-sensory experience.
