About this Event

Join Dame Gaylene Preston as we take this unique opportunity to see one of the films that built her reputation as a leading movie director. New Zealand Film Commission synopsis:

Ruby is old. Rata is young. They seem to have nothing in common... except for Willie. Maybe he'll be the peacemaker in their domestic warfare.

The small downstairs apartment is a dream come true for Rata (Vanessa Rare), and Ruby (Yvonne Lawley) encourages her agent to rent it to the suitable young businesswoman she sees from her window. ... But nothing is as it seems.
... Rata is a mistress of disguise ... a would-be rock singer and mother of eight-year-old Willie (Lee Mete-Kingi). ... Buckle (Simon Barnett), the agent ... soon finds both women more than a match for him.

From the ensuing clash of personalities and generation, emerges a story told with humour, warmth and charm - of two determined and manipulative women who have more in common than they realise...

Gaylene's recently published memoir is available for sale on this site - it will be supplied and signed by the author at the Bridgeway event. Mary Macpherson review in Landfall includes:

"Gaylene’s Take is a cornucopia of a book, written in a conversational voice that suits Preston’s threaded-together stories. By the end, we’ve been taken through rich accounts of the major documentaries and films she has made, learnt about the workings of the New Zealand film industry and its people, and felt Preston’s love of bringing overlooked voices to light. It is highly recommended reading for anyone interested in film, New Zealand social history and, above all, storytelling."
