Gather Round – Autumn Open Day

Gather Round, is a new seasonal open day at Camden Art Centre to celebrate and try different creative activities taking place in our centre.

Join us for a day full of interactive activities for adults, children and families including ceramics, drawing, activities in our garden and art-making taking place across the Centre with a free lunch provided by our café.

We’ll be joined by artists working across different strands of our programme for a day-long celebration of making and to mark the beginning of our new exhibitions by Forrest Bess and Dani & Sheilah ReStack.

Everyone welcome, come along to meet, make and eat together.

Day schedule:

Ceramics with Ewelina Bartowska

Drop-in between 11am-1pm and 3-5pm in our Ceramics Studio

Try your hand at working with clay to make and decorate tiles

The Gardening Drawing Club with Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck

Sessions starting at 11am, 2pm and 4pm in our Garden

Reconnect with nature with an introduction to planting and drawing outside in the garden

Lunch with Bar Bicicletta

Between 12-2pm in our Café

Family Takeover with Lily Ash Sakula

Drop in between 2-5pm in our Drawing Studio

Creative and fun making activities for children and adults

Explore Camden Art Centre with Nqatyiswa Mendu

• Everyone welcome: adults, children and families (children must be accompanied by an adult)
• Drop in anytime between 11am-5pm, book free via eventbrite to guarantee a space
• Food is limited and will be operated on a first come, first serve basis. Our café will also be open for other purchases, Lunch provided with be vegetarian/vegan and gluten free

Meet the artists:

Ewelina Bartowska is working on our Community Curriculum with Rochester Square, collaborating with families who are part of The Mockingbird Programme.Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck is our Garden artist in residence for 2022/23 collaborating with local schools. Lily Ash Sakula is leading our Family Takeover for autumn/winter 2022. Nqatyiswa Mendu was part of our Transformative Future’s Youth Collective through 2021-22.

Ewelina Bartowska is a ceramic sculptress and clay activist exploring the transformative power of raw materials. Her practice embraces sustainable processes; she has become an alternative kiln builder as a way to link place and community. She believes in the transformative power of raw materials and the benefits of time spent on making together. Currently she is developing a series of vessels made with recycled clay and decorated with a glaze from the Thames. Ewelina has worked with Rochester Square, Mud Gang Pottery, Hamstead School of Art, CSM and Tate Exchange. Web: https://ewelina.uk/Insta: @ewe_space

Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck (b.1990, Strasbourg, France) is a painter, transdisciplinary artist, and cultural practitioner artist based in rural Oxfordshir. Her practice composed of painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, film, photography and writing often conceals ecological messages, rendered in soft and delicate methods. In several of the artist’s projects, interaction with the environment and others plays a central role. Solo exhibitions include Dreaming of Tomorrow at Nidi Gallery in Tokyo. Books on her practice have been published by InOtherWords Imprint, Chose Commune and Jane & Jeremy. In 2014, Johanna founded the positive and collaborative cultural project Poetic Pastel. Nqatyiswa Mendu also known as Nikki is an artist whose practice and interests lie in storytelling, participatory workshop facilitation and writing. She is motivated by the importance of conversation and dialogue as a tool for social change. Lily Ash Sakula is a trans non-binary artist, animator and educator living in Deptford, London. They make collaborative animated films that seek to link different generations and communities, creating spaces in which they take their lead from participants’ ideas and processes. They want to create imaginative space for a world without borders, without prisons, without gender. Lily runs participatory projects in schools, museums, galleries and theatres working with a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Recent partners have included: Meet me at the Albany, Camden Arts Centre, House of Illustration, Watts Gallery, Alexandra Palace, Create, Carers Lewisham, John Chilton School, Galop, Queer Youth Art Collective, Project Indigo and Ministry of Stories.Lily is interested in capturing joy and freedom through movement, creating magical spaces in which social norms can be broken, and seek through their work to be an active practitioner of radical hope.
