Gary Lucas Live to FREAKS w/The Earles

Renowned guitarist/composer Gary Lucas is back with a premiere score! A seminal horror film by the celebrated Tod Browning, Freaks is the story of the “circus freaks revenge” - avenging a M**der plot against one of their own - portrayed by the sideshow artists as themselves. The grotesque and the macabre were never better filmed, yet the tone is never voyeuristic, or condescending - a unique achievement. M-G-M disowned it; the UK banned it!

Gary Lucas’ notes: Having first read of Brownings shocker, Freaks, in “An Illustrated History of the Horror Film”, I later saw a rare print at a one-night screening while in high school. This DARK CARNIVAL of a film gave me nightmares, and so haunted me that years later, wondering what new film to score (I’ve done a dozen of these beginning w/The Golem), I recalled that Freaks has no music score, only dialogue and sound effects (the result of studio cost cutting). So I composed a spectral solo guitar score, almost orchestral in nature, which I play as a continuous underscore - and on Saturday March 22nd, I’ll be performing the World Premiere for the 31st James River Film Festival! And a happy nightmare to you.....
