Fine Art Exhibition: GARTEL: MEDIA BLITZ PALM BEACH

Reception: September 3, 2022 at 7 p.m.
Exhibition dates: September 3-October 1, 2022

Laurence Gartel, known as the Father of Digital Art has been pioneering the Computer aesthetic for over 45-years. It has been a global journey showing the world a new way to communicate. Gartel and his new visual language sparked interest delivering the keynote speech at the First Pan Pacific Computer Conference in Melbourne, Australia. His arrival triggered much anticipated excitement landing him on the front page of The Australian newspaper in 1985. This was a decade after Gartel discovered analog system computers working with video guru Nam June Paik at Media Study/Buffalo in upstate New York.

What triggered a true explosion of interest was when Laurence visited the Ampex Corporation in Redwood City, California and worked on the Ampex AVA system developed by New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). This system allowed sports commentator John Madden to show how offense and defensive football teams worked the scrimmage line with drawn “X’s and O’s.” Gartel’s access to such a proprietary system gave him the ability to write an in depth article for “Millimeter magazine.” For this he became a wanted man, discovering Computer systems that Art could be made on. Media was the way the world got educated and through promotional materials, posters, newspaper articles, and highly publicized commissions such as the first Digital Art cover for Forbes Magazine, and his ABOLUT GARTEL for Absolut Vodka and teaching Andy Warhol how to use the Amiga Computer, gave the Artist his “tour de force.”

Media has played a major role in promoting activities and convincing a skeptical public that Digital Art was a viable medium and one that could be utilized as a communication tool. Today of course Digital Art is everywhere for everything. Gartel’s early experiments paved the way for today’s creators. Mr. Gartel continues to reinvent the medium creating “Welcome to Miami” an installation at the Miami Central Brightline Rail station of large-scale letters wrapped in his Digital Art. His earlier series, “Miami and the Millennium” are 19-back lit light boxes produced in 1995 for the Miami International Airport at Lufthansa Concourse F, then later moved to the Overtown Courthouse Lobby, one of the first buildings, redeveloping the downtown district. More recently Gartel created “Legends of Rock & Roll” for the new Seminole Hard Rock Guitar Hotel Lobby. He was given a historical and humbling plaque: Quite an honor to a living Artist.

Visitors to The Box Gallery will witness numerous posters, and media announcements to which Gartel says are the Art itself. “Media is the breath and voice of the Artist,” says Gartel. Box Gallerist Rolando Barrero Chang tells journalists, “Gartel’s work is an avalanche of public awareness.” = “The Artist himself is the Art.” Laurence Gartel has been a South Florida Resident for over 28-years.
