Garibaldi and Manchester
The cult of Garibaldi in Britain has been the focus of considerable scholarly attention in the recent past and British historians have been central to his memorialisation since the late nineteenth century. His visits to London and Newcastle in 1854 aboard the Commonwealth and his residency in London and on the Isle of Wight in the mid-1860s were met with feverish acclaim by British radicals, liberals, and non-conformists. This talk will focus upon the traces of Garibaldi as found in contemporary Manchester and what they tell us about his reception and engagement with the political and religious movements which were radically reconfiguring the political and social landscape of industrial Britain in the second half of the 19thC.
Speaker: Talk by our Honorary President, Prof. Stephen J. Milner (Serena Professor of Italian Studies – The University of Manchester)
Venue: Cross Street Chapel - Cross Street, Manchester M2 1NL
Admission: members and our students of Italian FREE / non-members £ 3.00
The talk (in English) will be followed by a social gathering with a glass of wine and nibbles.
