Join us for a three part series that will teach you how to garden regeneratively! Don’t know what that is? It’s taking organic to the next level. Organic focuses on avoiding many synthetic inputs (pesticides, fertilizers, etc) to do relatively little harm. Regeneratively takes you further, actively restoring soil health, capturing and sequestering carbon, and boosting biodiversity! In this way what you grow is healthier, your soil is more productive, and it costs so much less than any other form of gardening.

June 13: Soil and Seasons

Healthy soil = healthy plants, healthy food, and a healthy environment. Do you know the soil food web? You’ll be amazed at what is right beneath our feet and learn why it’s so important to every person on the planet.

Arizona has a bad reputation for being a difficult place to grow. We have heat, dust, cactus, and water can be scarce. Regenerative gardening helps the soil hold more water, lower the temperature in our heat islands, and sequester carbon from the atmosphere. You just have to know what to grow when! We’ll discuss and outline what to grow in each season, what can be grown at different times, and give you outlines to follow.

June 20: Set Up and Seeds

There are really great ways to set up gardens here in our desert climate Zone 9B. There are ways to mitigate the heat, create your own microclimate, and use cover crops o save your soil

Saving seeds and planting those that you save are the best way to be successful in your own garden. Plants acclimate and pass that attribute to the seeds they develop. Planting seeds will vary depending on the seed and the climate. We’ll get down and dirty planting some seeds and learning how to care for them and transplant them into the garden.

June 27: September Season and Success

Fall is one of the best seasons to grow here in the desert. The soil is still warm, most of the pests have lived out their life cycle, and the evenings cool down. All the information in the previous two classes will set you up to be successful during the fall season and we’ll go over some particulars that will make it even more rewarding.

Success at gardening takes practice, it’s not as easy as many would have you believe. It also lends itself to experimentation which will ultimately make you the best gardener you can be. This is the question and answer period you’ve been looking for, and we will discuss how to transition from season to season in the future.

About Susan Stoltz

Susan’s interest in regenerative gardening began when she worked at the Phoenix Zoo where she spent a decade teaching guests and students about ecosystems, conservation, and wildlife. An avid gardener for 25 years in three very different climate zones across the USA, Ms. Stoltz earned her Master Gardening Certificate from the University of Arizona in 2023. She’s spent the past 10 years exploring and adapting seeds to warmer climates and has had great success with several varieties of vegetables and herbs.

Susan is currently scheduled to begin the Cornell University Medicinal Plants program and is very fortunate to be teaching regenerative gardening and other classes at the Arizona Worm Farm in Phoenix. She also gives tours of the farm explaining how the ecosystem works and has been helping to develop the educational program for kids.

Ms. Stoltz has spent the past two years writing a column for the University of Arizona’s Master Gardening Magazine; her specialty is insects of every kind. She now writes featured pieces about invasive species and insects, peat bogs, what weeds tell us about our soil, artificial turf and its effects on our soil and water, flood resilience, urban heat islands, and pretty much anything she finds fascinating or feels needs to be brought to our awareness as gardeners and humans. Susan also does quite a bit of public speaking to gardening groups and at conferences.
