Session 1: How to Grow Seedlings Successfully

  • Garden Tour
  • Learn what seedlings need to grow. Identify problems that occur in seed development and how to solve them.
  • Learn principles of Garden Entrepreneurship - how to price and sell seedlings, start-up fees, and the cost of maintaining healthy plants.

Session 2: How to Grow/Harvest Kale and Make Kale Chips

  • Learn how to plant and care for kale plants from seed to harvest.
  • Learn the proper preparation of kale to bake as a healthy snack for consumption.

Session 3: How to use a Soil Blocker

  • Learn how to read a seed package, use necessary soil nutrients (Microbes), grow organically, control pests, and use proper harvesting techniques.
  • Learn to make mini and 2" blocks for planting seeds. Participants receive a pot, soil, and seed to take home.
  • Learn about soil types and when to use them.

Session 4: Making Concrete Grow Pots and Concrete Raised Beds

  • Learn how to make concrete pots for plants to take home or sell.
  • Learn to mix concrete and pour raised beds. After attending this and one additional training, participants should be able to make two 4x4 beds, one to donate to the Sulfur Springs Farm Hub and one to keep.

Session 5: Growing and Selling Lettuce and More using the Aeroponic Tower

  • Understand the Aeroponic Tower for growing lettuce, basil, parsley, and other foods.
  • Learn how to harvest and package produce for the market or individual consumption,
  • Learn how to price produce to sell at local farmers' markets.

Session 6: Garden Design & Irrigation Set Up

  • Learn the importance of proper plant placement in the garden.
  • Understand bed orientation for efficient sunlight, watering intervals, drip irrigation, raised beds vs. in the ground, and other watering options.

Session 7: Garden Celebration with local Chef Ja’Vin, Owner of Ja’Vin’s Culinary LLC

  • 5-Question Garden Quiz and Certificate Presentation
  • Guest Chef will teach participants how to make and serve his award-winning specialty -- “Collard Green Gumbo.”
