Garden Promenade: Artist Talk and Guided Nature Walk
Schedule
Fri Oct 25 2024 at 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
UTC+11:00Location
Australian National Botanic Gardens | Canberra, CT
Join local Canberra artist Sharon Peoples and Wellspring facilitator Sally Holliday (Landcare ACT) for a morning at the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
Featuring textile works by Sharon Peoples, Garden Promenade - on show at the Australian National Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre - speculates on what could have been if Sarah Sophia Banks had travelled to Australia instead of only her brother, Sir Joseph Banks.
Sarah Sophia Banks spent much of her time advancing Joseph’s career while building her own priceless collection of coins, medals, visiting cards, satirical prints and print ephemera. She had an ‘eyebrow-raising fashion sense’ and was often described as a ‘fashion whip’.
Artist Sharon Peoples focuses on motifs of plants collected by Sir Joseph Banks, such as flannel flowers, grevilleas and banksias using the live collection of the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
Sharon will give an artist talk in the gallery space, after which Sally Holliday will lead a nature connection walk through the gardens.
We will convene in the visitor centre gallery space (next to the book shop) at 10am, then enjoy our own promenade of sorts through the gardens, pausing on route to experience some nature connection activities.
Please wear enclosed shoes and be sunwise, bring a water bottle to keep hydrated. You are welcome to bring a visual diary or nature journal on the walk to do some sketches along the way. You could equally use your phone to capture what you see around you.
Landcare ACT's Women in Nature program welcomes all women, including those who identify as cis, trans, and non-binary. Events are FREE thanks to the support of a Community Grant from ACTEWAGL, but registration is essential to secure your spot as places are limited.
