Doors at 7:30 PM / Show at 8 PMGamelan Sekar Jaya is a performing arts organization devoted to advancing artistic exchange between Bali and the United States through residencies, workshops, performances, and the creation of innovative new works for music and dance. Founded in Berkeley, California in 1979, Sekar Jaya has been called “the finest Balinese gamelan outside of Indonesia” by Indonesia’s Tempo Magazine and has performed in venues ranging from remote village squares in Bali to LA’s Hollywood Bowl.
Gamelan Sekar Jaya is thrilled to return to favorite venue Ashkenaz, this time with a performance featuring two bronze ensembles: the virtuosic Gong Kebyar and the rare, delicate Semar Pegulingan. The program will include both traditional pieces (like the showstopping Taruna Jaya) and new innovations composed for Gamelan Sekar Jaya by visionary composer and 2023-2024 Guest Music Director Ni Nyoman Srayamurtikanti. The bronze ensembles are joined at this performance by Gamelan Sekar Jaya's dancers, led this season by senior ensemble members Shoko Yamamuro, Casey Lee, and Monali Varaiya.
