The National Great Blacks In Wax Museum will be hosting our first game night and we are excited to connect with Dr. Lawrence Brown, creator of the Black Butterfly Dream Lab, who will introduce his game "Urban Cipher". The game is designed to teach people about Baltimore’s structural inequities and seeks to develop an understanding about how economic policies and practices, like redlining, have deepened the wealth gap between Black and White communities.
“The game Urban Cipher reveals the effects of this devastating federal-city partnership and highlights how red and yellow neighborhoods were structurally disadvantaged, while blue and green neighborhoods were structurally advantaged. We are still living with the impacts of this map over 85 years later.” said Dr. Lawrence
The Urban Cipher game has been a natural extension of the presentations to which Brown is invited regularly. He often presents at professional days for educators, and he has spoken all over the country about his book, so he let his contacts know about the board game, and has included it in his workshops.
Participants will engage in the board game, followed by a reflective debrief to extract valuable insights. Dr. Lawrence will then lead a tour of the "Cash Crop Exhibit" by Maker/Sculptor Stephen Hayes.
This special Dream Lab workshop is dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his committed activism for fair housing.
Dr. Brown’s book, The Black Butterfly, and his two board games will be available for sale.
