Gallery Talk: George Curtis Levi & Halcyon Levi

Join artists George Curtis Levi (Southern Cheyenne/Arapaho, Lakota) and Halcyon Levi (Cheyenne, Arapaho) for a conversation about their work in . Together, father and daughter will discuss how Cheyenne history, storytelling, artistic traditions, and enduring connections to Colorado shape their practices, offering intergenerational perspectives on identity, place, and the ongoing significance of the Cheyenne homeland.

About the Artists

George Curtis Levi (b. 1970, Southern Cheyenne/Arapaho, Lakota; lives and works in Oklahoma) is a Cheyenne Chief, a member of the Cheyenne Chief's Society. He was born and raised in Western Oklahoma and practices the Traditional Ceremonials of his Cheyenne People.
As an artist he is well known across the U.S. and worldwide. The genres that he works in includes traditional Cheyenne artforms such as ledger art, beadwork, parfleche making and traditional hide tanning. He also is known for his photography, paintings, and he works in acrylics, colored pencils, inks, gouache and watercolors when doing his paintings.
Expressions of his artwork vary from traditional Cheyenne works to pop art, contemporary and nude art. As an artist, he likes to push the boundaries of his art. He works with Art Institutions, Universities, The National Park Service, Smithsonian Institute Public schools, Galleries and private individuals.
Colorado is the Traditional Homeland of The Cheyenne People and he is happy to be a part of this exhibition alongside his daughter Halcyon Grace Levi to give an input from a Cheyenne Perspective.

Halcyon Levi (b. 2004, Oklahoma; lives and works in Denver), a talented 21-year-old artist, has gained recognition for her unique ability to transform childhood stories into captivating visual narratives. Inspired by the beauty of her Oklahoma surroundings and her Cheyenne and Arapaho tribal heritage, her art features a diverse range of wildlife and vibrant, bright colors. Levi’s deep connection to her family’s history and tribal roots in Western and Southwestern Oklahoma informs her artistic expression.

Levi utilizes a variety of artistic mediums, including colored pencils, acrylic pens, and vintage accounting ledgers from the 1900s, which add a distinct touch to her artwork. She also explores digital art and other media, allowing her to experiment with different techniques and styles.

Her talent has earned her national recognition, with her work featured in galleries, exhibitions, and markets across the country, including notable exhibitions at the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) in New Mexico and the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington, D.C. In the spring of 2023, Levi’s art was showcased in the Pioneer Woman’s magazine, highlighting her reputation as a remarkable artist.

As one of the very few descendants of the Sand Creek Massacre attending the University of Denver, Levi’s journey is deeply rooted in her family’s history and tribal heritage, particularly their profound connection to the land in Colorado. Majoring in anthropology at the university, she brings her unique perspective to her artistic expressions.

Through her art, Halcyon Levi shares her love for storytelling, her connection to her tribal heritage, and her admiration for the natural beauty of Oklahoma. Her ability to blend traditional techniques with contemporary media showcases her versatility as an artist, ensuring her work continues to captivate audiences and leave a lasting impression.
