About this Event

Langston Hughes II is an acclaimed saxophonist, woodwind doubler, composer, and educator—quickly emerging as one of the most compelling young voices in jazz today. A native of Washington, D.C., he began his musical journey in the Prince George’s County public school system before studying at Howard University with Charlie Young III and Cyrus Chestnut, later earning his Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from The Juilliard School. Rooted in gospel and the rich lineage of Black American Music, Langston’s sound is soulful, expressive, and rhythmically driven, shaping high-energy performances full of passion, beauty, and joy. He has toured with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and performs regularly with Cyrus Chestnut and Ulysses Owens Jr.’s Generation Y Band. An in-demand woodwind performer on and off Broadway—most recently with A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical and Just in Time: The Bobby Darin Story—he is also a former Strathmore Artist in Residence and a graduate of the Kennedy Center’s Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead. A dedicated educator through his private studio and his work with FAME, Langston is committed to uplifting young artists, with critics praising his rising influence: “This young man is poised to make an impact with his emotion-evoking sound and style” (All About Jazz), and “By any intelligent calculation of Who’s Next… he’s right there” (Willard Jenkins, DC Jazz Fest).

Based in Brooklyn, Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman is known for showcasing a catalogue of originals and arrangements of works by Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and more, and honors the history of these master pianists with performances that are both soulful and hard-hitting. Gabriel can be found touring and/or performing in NYC with internationally renowned jazz artists including CHRISTOPHER MCBRIDE (GRAMMY-winner), LUCAS PINO (Artistic Director at Brubeck Jazz Summit), TIM GREEN (sax for Michael Bublé and GRAMMY nominee), TYREEK MCDOLE (Sarah Vaughan Competition 1st place), APRIL VARNER (Ella FItzgerald Competition 1st place), ERENA TERAKUBO (Kenny Barron Quartet, Jon Faddis All-Star Big Band...etc), Ben Solomon (Chick Corea, Wallace Roney, Aaron Parks), Emmanuel Michael (Aaron Parks, Ambrose Akinmusire) and more. Gabriel performs frequently at household jazz venues including The Django, Ornithology, Zinc Bar, The Harlem Jazz Museum, Cellar Dog...etc., and is grateful to have music take him across the world, as far as Norway and Iceland. He’s appeared twice at CARNEGIE HALL, the French and Czech Consulates in NYC, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, and is recognized for combining jazz performance and storytelling, touring multiple projects including "Invisible Jazz Giants" and "The Topography of Jazz: Revolutions in Sound Up, Down, and Around NYC" across the country.

Eytan Schillinger-Hyman is an accomplished bassist and composer based in New York City, renowned for his proficiency on both upright and electric bass. Eytan is a recent graduate of The Juilliard School, with a Master’s degree in Jazz Bass Performance, where he studied under the mentorship of jazz virtuosos Gerald Cannon, Ron Carter, Ben Wolfe, Donald Vega and Billy Drummond. With a vibrant career that spans the jazz scenes of New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, Eytan has performed at renowned venues and festivals including BlueNote NYC, Dizzy's Jazz at Lincoln Center, SFJAZZ, The Anthem DC (opening for Lalah Hathaway), Smalls, The Jazz Cruise, and The Monterey Jazz Festival, among many others. He plays for Matthew Whitaker and Langston Hughes II and has performed with acclaimed musicians such as Quincy Phillips, Mike King, Christopher McBride, Lawrence Fields and more. He also holds dual degrees in Jazz Bass Performance and Sociology from Oberlin College and Conservatory, where he studied and collaborated with jazz legends such as Billy Hart, Gary Bartz, and Eddie Henderson. When he is not on the road, you can find him playing regularly on the New York City scene with a variety of artists, including his identical twin brother and pianist, Gabriel.
