Join us for 2 urchin culling shore dives at Tanker’s Reef!
This event is for certified Kelp Restoration Divers. However, divers interested in the Kelp Restoration certification are welcome to join one (1) Meetup as a trial experience before they take the class.
> > NEW << We’re excited to have divers new to the project join our Meetups as a trial experience! For everyone's safety, we've added Meetup requirements for all participating divers:
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Autonomous diver with at least 20 Monterey (or similar cold water) dives
PLEASE BRING:
• Certification card
• Kelp Restoration Diver card (if applicable)
• 2 tanks & dive gear (including weights)
• Compass
• SMB (surface marker buoy)
• Cutting device
• Dive light
• Hammer - bring a chipping/welding hammer or borrow one of ours
• Warm clothes for surface interval
• Water bottle
• Sunscreen
• Slate (optional–if you want to count urchins)
• 2022 California sportfishing license: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Licensing/Online-Sales
PROVIDED: Kelp-loving dive buddies, hammers, snacks, drinks, hot soup, camaraderie, O2 & first aid kit
MEETING LOCATION: Meet at Intersection of Del Monte Ave & Park Avenue at 8:00 am in your street clothes. Text Keith at (408) 206-0721. He'll let you inside the Del Monte Townhomes on La Playa St.
PARKING: Please DROP OFF your gear on the mats inside the complex and park OUTSIDE the gates on Park Ave.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
• You’ll have to sign our waiver at the event
• 8-12 minute surface swim. We swim out as a group, but conduct dives as buddy pairs (not guided dives)
• Task loading–counting urchins (optional), carefully culling without harming surrounding marine life, and navigating–all while staying close to your buddy and keeping track of your buoyancy and air
• Cool critters: octopus, swell sharks, Pacific electric rays, big copper rockfish, onespot fringeheads
