Event Details

Dr David Brandman presenting Intracortical Brain Computer Interfaces to Restore Communication in People with Paralysis

A brain–computer interface (BCI) is a device that records brain signals and then translates those signals to allow people to control objects in their environment. BrainGate2 is an ongoing early feasibility study studying the safety profile of chronically implanted (Utah) arrays in people with paralysis, including brainstem stroke, spinal cord injury, and neuromuscular diseases like ALS. I will discuss how BCIs can be used to restore communication to people living with dysarthria, by decoding the user’s intention to speak. I will describe how a BCI can be used to decode text as well as synthesize speech in real-time. Finally, I will discuss the role of industry and describe upcoming clinical trials studying fully-implanted BCIs.

About the Presenter

I am an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at UC Davis. My clinical practice focuses on functional & epilepsy surgery, with an emphasis on neuromodulation and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Together with Assistant Professor Sergey Stavisky, PhD, I co-direct the UC Davis Neuroprosthetics Lab. Our group focuses on the intersection between clinical neurophysiology, computational neuroscience, and neuroprosthetics. We are especially interested in developing brain computer interface technology to help people living with paralysis. Our primary focus is to develop technologies to restore speech for people who cannot speak (e.g. due to ALS or stroke), and reach & grasp for people with tetraplegia (e.g. due to spinal cord injury or other neurodegenerative diseases).

Conflicts:

I am the proposed Study-PI for the Paradromics Connect-One early feasibility study.

I am a paid ad-hoc consultant for Globus Medical Inc.

There will be a drinks & networking reception after the lecture

This event is open and free to ALL but registration is required. If you are unable to attend, please do release your ticket or contact the organiser for further help [email protected]
