Dr. Rob Toonen's talk, titled “The Future of Coral Reefs in Hawaiʻi and Technology to Reverse Coral Reef Loss” will provide an overview of the latest research on how coral reefs respond to environmental stressors, along with emerging technologies being developed at the University of Hawai‘i to help address coral reef decline.
About Dr. Rob Toonen, Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology
Dr. Toonen joined the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 2003 and is currently the Ruth Gates Endowed Chair of Coral Reef Studies and Director of the Marine Biology Graduate Program. His lab has published more than 500 peer-reviewed research papers and trained over 50 post-doctoral fellows and Ph.D. students. He has served as a technical expert to state and federal agencies and currently sits on the boards of several Native Hawaiian organizations. In 2024, he was named a Fellow of the International Coral Reef Society and is recognized among the world’s leading researchers. He is also the only University of Hawai‘i faculty member to receive Board of Regents awards for excellence in teaching, research, and service.
