Contest Description:
tinkrLAB is inviting children in the Greater Lansing area to take part in the first ever tinkrLAB Future Inventors Contest!
The contest is sponsored by helloSTEAM, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with tinkrLAB, and Burcham Hills Retirement Community.
Children ages 6-12 are called to create an invention that will help people or animals in some way. This contest will be judged, and the top three inventors from each age category will win a cash prize, tinkrLAB merch, a custom trophy, and an exclusive tour of the tinkrLAB inventor workshop!
To submit to the competition, children must create a physical prototype of their invention, and complete the entry and consent forms. Participants are able to use whatever supplies they would like to create their invention prototype, however they must visit tinkr2.0 and use a minimum of five items from the Creation Station.
To be considered for the contest, children must drop off their prototype and form at tinkr2.0 by 12:00pm on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024. Entries will be judged on the quality of the prototype (must use at least 5 items from tinkrLAB’s Creation Station), the value of the concept, the written descriptions/ oral presentation of the product, and the invention's ability to help people or animals. If your child is interested in participating, they must visit tinkr2.0 to pick up the necessary forms and pay the $4.99 Creation Station access fee (more details below). Only one entry per child.
Support:
We will have open workshop days with mentors available to help with ideas and making inventions on:
- Saturday, November 9 • 10a-2p
- Tuesday, November 12 • 5p-7p
- Tuesday, November 19 • 5p-7p
These are FREE for enrolled kiddos.
Invention Details:
The prototype of the invention does not need to be a working prototype, but rather a 3-Dimensional, visual explanation of the concept. Children are asked to use a minimum of 5 items from the Creation Station at tinkr2.0. There is a $4.99 fee to use the Creation Station, however there is no limit to the amount of supplies that children are allowed to use.
At the time of payment, children and parents/guardians must fill out the consent form and give it a tinkr2.0 employee.
Once the fee is paid, participants are welcome to come back as many times as they need to select supplies. Children can build their invention at tinkr2.0, or take the supplies with them to build at home. Participants are welcome to use additional purchased supplies or materials from home to add to their invention.
If inventors are in need of a specific material, there are also additional supplies available for purchase in the “STEAM Experiment Supplies” section at tinkr2.0.
Entry/Consent Form Details:
In addition to their prototype, children must also complete the Inventor Contest Entry Form. The form consists of five basic written questions.
Invention Submission:
In order to be considered for judging, children must drop off their invention and the entry form at tinkr2.0 by November 23rd, 2024 by 12:00pm. When participants turn in their inventions, they will receive tinkrCASH to spend at tinkr2.0. The children also have the option to provide an oral presentation of their invention to the judges. This part is optional, but recommended, as children who present will receive additional points added to their judged score. The oral presentation must be a maximum of 2 minutes, and may be followed up with a few questions from the judges. During the oral presentation, children can describe the purpose of their invention, and how it is helpful to people or animals. The presentation will be relaxed and welcoming, and the judges will not provide any verbal feedback directly after the presentation. If children are interested in presenting their invention, they must come to tinkr2.0 in-person on November 23rd at 1:00pm. Winners will be announced immediately after judging. We ask that all participants in the contest be present when the winners are announced, however if you are unable to be there, we will contact you via email if you win.
Teamwork:
Children are welcome to work on a team with 1-2 additional kids. If on a team, children under 5 are welcome to participate.
Children ages 13+ may not participate, however they are able to provide some assistance on the invention if needed. If on a team, winners must split the cash prize evenly. Team members can work together to fill out one entry form, however, each team member must separately fill out the consent form and turn it in at tinkr2.0.
