About this Event
AYM offers a comprehensive 8-week program for first time filmmakers in middle and high school, completely FREE of charge. Want to create your own content, but aren’t sure how? Our aim is to teach you the fundamentals of filmmaking — how to use professional quality cameras, basic lighting and audio skills, as well as editing. We focus on documentary style filmmaking, focusing on issues that affect our community most. You’ll receive hands-on experience and learn from industry professionals while collaborating on a short film and honing skills in production, direction, and editing.
Workshop Details:
- Duration: Saturdays, April 13-June 8 (8 weeks/sessions)
- Time: 11:00am-1:30pm (2 hours)
- Age: Middle and high school students only
- Location: 900 Wayne Ave. Silver Spring, MD, basement level /Level B
- Skill Level: Beginner to advanced
- Parents must provide signed permission form and video waiver for the year 2024
- MCPS students eligible for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours based on attendance and participation.

- All finished projects will be screened and entered into festivals.

Workshop Agenda:
- Week 1: Introduction to Filmmaking and Issue Selection
- Week 2: Pre-production, Planning and Scripting
- Week 3-4: Filming and Interview skills
- Week 5: Preparation and Editing Basics
- Week 6-7: Post-production: Editing
- Week 8: Critique and Conclusion

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR!
Graham Holford (Filmmaker, He/Him)
Graham Holford is a British filmmaker based in Washington, D.C. His films have been showcased at prestigious film festivals across the United States, UK, and Asia. Graham serves as an associate producer at Sightline Media, a media outlet specializing in military reporting. Additionally, he holds the position of head programmer at the North by North International Film Festival. Graham has also shared his expertise by teaching Filmmaking at Ohio University and Intertochen School of the Arts.
