Future Fashion: Education in transition

Op 9 oktober nodigen we je uit voor een bijzondere dag in het hart van Rotterdam, waarin we samen bouwen aan een nieuwe modewereld. Een wereld waarin schoonheid niet ten koste gaat van mens of planeet. Waar lokale vakmensen, ontwerpers, studenten en modeprofessionals samenkomen om te werken aan een systeem dat eerlijker, creatiever en duurzamer is.

Samen met studenten van vijf Rotterdamse modeopleidingen, Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam Academy Arts & Crafts, Albeda Fashion, Zadkine International Business & Fashion en het Zadkine B&D Lab, maken we van deze dag een levend laboratorium voor verandering.

Tijdens deze dag onderzoeken we in interactieve workshops, inspirerende seminars en gezamenlijke gesprekken hoe mode een weerspiegeling kan worden van onze waarden, niet alleen van onze smaak.

Info: The lecture will focus on two unique materials: flax and fungi. Flax is a centuries-old material that is gaining renewed interest due to its contribution to soil health and sustainable agriculture. Fungi represent an innovative design approach that allows materials to literally grow. Maaike Gottschal and Dasha Tsapenko will demonstrate how this can be applied in textile/fashion practice.

Evalueren betekent hier niet alleen beoordelen, maar juist het doorbouwen en verbeteren van ideeën met oog voor kwaliteit en impact. Evaluation doesn't just mean assessing, but rather developing and improving ideas with an eye for quality and impact. Info: De workshop What's on the Inside draait om deconstructie: een bestaand kledingstuk wordt binnenstebuiten gekeerd en onderzocht. Deelnemers met basiskennis kleermaken werken met kledingstukken afkomstig van de textielsorteerder. Ze ontdekken de kwaliteiten van materiaal en vorm door een onconventionele benadering, geïnspireerd door ontwerpers als Margiela en Watanabe. Zo wordt mode niet alleen hergebruikt, maar ook opnieuw gelezen als communicatiemiddel – van buitenaf en van binnenuit. /// The "What's on the Inside" workshop revolves around deconstruction: an existing garment is turned inside out and examined. Participants with basic tailoring knowledge work with garments from the textile sorter. They explore the qualities of material and form through an unconventional approach, inspired by designers like Margiela and Watanabe. In this way, fashion is not only reused but also reinterpreted as a means of communication—from the outside and from the inside.

De expositie was al te zien bij Masterly, het Nederlandse paviljoen tijdens de Salone del Mobile in Milaan. De studenten gaan in gesprek met bezoekers over hun uitgangspunten en ervaringen. /// An exhibition of multifunctional garments designed and made by second-year Fashion Tailor students. The exhibition was previously on display at Masterly, the Dutch pavilion at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. The students will be discussing their principles and experiences with visitors.

 During this workshop:
✨ Learn how to spin flax—an ancient, sustainable fiber—even just on your thigh or with a simple spindle.
✨ Discover how thread is woven into textiles, using nothing more than a piece of cardboard and your own hands.
✨ Hear the surprising story of the connection between ancient looms and the development of modern computer technology. 
✨ Get a glimpse into the future: flax is now used in innovative applications like lightweight racing bikes, surfboards, and musical instruments.
In just 90 minutes, you'll have made your own piece of thread or fabric and gained a glimpse into how something as simple as flax connects our history, technology, and creativity.

Deelnemers maken kennis met praktische technieken met natuurlijke vezels en mycelium, geïnspireerd door Tsapenko's werk. De sessie omvat ook een discussie over de rol van ambacht in toekomstige ontwerpsystemen en ecologisch denken. /// Join artist Dasha Tsapenko for an immersive workshop exploring the intersection of textile art, sustainability, and biobased materials. Participants will learn practical techniques using natural fibers and mycelium, inspired by Tsapenko's work. The session will also include a discussion on the role of craft in future design systems and ecological thinking.

Met jaren ervaring bij toonaangevende merken laat ze zien hoe overproductie ontstaat—van forecasting tot inkoop—en wat de impact is op mens, milieu en merkwaarde.
Carmela's empathische ontwerpbenadering toont dat je voor verschillende doelgroepen kunt ontwerpen zónder de planeet (en je marge) uit het oog te verliezen. /// Carmela Filareto (Concept/Senior Designer & Fashion Design Instructor) takes you behind the scenes of international womenswear collections. With years of experience with leading brands, she shows how overproduction arises—from forecasting to purchasing—and its impact on people, the environment, and brand value.

Ginie Servant-Miklos laat deelnemers de volledige levensloop van één kledingstuk ontrafelen: grondstoffen, arbeid, logistiek, gebruik, end-of-life. Met haar Experimental Pedagogics-aanpak maak je onzichtbare kosten zichtbaar—economisch, sociaal én ecologisch. /// Environmental educator and assistant professor (Erasmus School of Social and Behavioral Sciences) Dr. Ginie Servant-Miklos allows participants to unravel the entire life cycle of a single garment: raw materials, labor, logistics, use, and end-of-life.
