Qazi Motahar Hossain Bhaban,
Urbanization is rapidly transforming the world, with cities now home to 56% of the global population, that is, 4.4 billion people and is expected to rise to nearly 70% by 2050. While cities drive economic growth, they face significant challenges, including over 2 billion tons of annual waste, projected to increase by 70%. Cities consume 75% of global energy and generate 70% of greenhouse gas emissions, making them key players in climate change. Urban heat islands further threaten the environment and economic productivity, with expected GDP losses of 1.4-1.7% by 2050. These issues underscore the urgent need for sustainable and innovative solutions.
