Jorge R. Gutierrez
Jorge R. Gutierrez (b. 1975), a.k.a. “Super Macho” is a Mexican animator, writer, producer, director, voice actor and artist. He co-created the Nickelodeon animated series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera with his wife Sandra Equihua, and co-wrote and directed the film The Book of Life and the television miniseries Maya and the Three. He and Equihua founded the production studio Mexopolis in 1994. This is his first solo exhibition at La Luz de Jesus Gallery.
FUTBOL! FUTBOL!! FUTBOL!!! is Gutierrez’s love letter to the internationally beloved sport of soccer/football at a prime time for Angelenos as we all collectively watch the World Cup. For Jorge, this is one of the celebratory times in which we all grow closer as we cheer on our teams. Raised in Tijuana, he has an intense passion for the sport and Mexico’s team. Each painting is cheeky and fresh, all through his iconic illustrative style. With a variety of characters either being iconic players, iconic mascots to iconic chants. Filled with pride and appetite for action, FUTBOL! FUTBOL!! FUTBOL!!! is the artistic way of saying ¡canta y no llores! to cheer on the players.
Jorge’s obsession with Mexican pop and folk culture runs deep throughout this entire exhibition. Focusing on the playful side of the sport entirely through the lens of fandom and community.
Each artwork still has that quintessential style seen in previous exhibitions like Border Bang, or in previous concept art, filled with exaggerated features, toothy grins, loud colors and witty remarks. His work is an intersection of folk art, cartoons and contemporary lowbrow.
The gallery is excited to continue to support artists exactly where they are and as they grow and learn with changing times. Nothing in this exhibition nor any exhibition utilizes artificial intelligence, from the process of the artwork to the writing and development of the exhibits. Only the purest art and all the humanity in between. La Luz de Jesus is more than proud to work with Jorge R. Gutierrez.
