Functionality and Perspective & Your Own God, Laboratory of creation by Judith Sánchez Ruíz / JSR Company
3 weeks laboratory with Judith Sánchez Ruíz: a technical, research and creation process

OBJECTIVES:
This laboratory will focus both on a body training experience and on a creation process that will end with two performances in the last evenings of the laboratory. Overall, participants will acquire tools developed by Judith Sanchez Ruiz to approach movement, improvisation, creation, choreography, and content production.

MORNING TRAINING – Functionality & Perspective in Dance:
These morning open classes are based on the 10 years investigation of Judith Sánchez Ruíz on the release technique. Participants will focus on the importance of being grounded, creating an understanding of the shifting of weight, clarity of movement, attention to detail, precision, and dynamics in a multidirectional approach. This practice will lead to very specific qualities of functional and organic movement while working with the imagination and the improvisation in
Functionality & Perspective give to the dancers many ways to understand movement’s initiation in the body that allow them to understand the functionality from a creative approach. These sessions will encourage the body to question and practice task-oriented exercises, equations, and scores.

AFTERNOON LABORATORY – Your Own God:
“In studying improvisation I came in contact with my body in another dimension. I wanted to use my biological rhythm, the texture of my organs, I wanted to gain a level of creativity coming from the history of the skeleton itself, separate from the knowledge we have gained. Without filters or assumptions of what movements are appropriate or not in contemporary dance. Much closer to the humans that we are and delivery beyond society or trendiness, rules or ideals.”
Judith Sánchez Ruíz
Your Own God’s research is based on JSR’s choreographic process and experience as a performer of diverse techniques and styles throughout her long international career.
Your Own God’s tools sourced methodologies, and practical exercises aim to unlock the mind from imitative academic dogma (that imposes a mainstream style and decorative content). We will focus on each participant’s individual awakening and exploration of our functional and artistic potential. The dancers will practice how to reset the mind, through radio exercises, ramifications and associations of vocabularies that will guide to a much deeper connection to a richer and organic movement. There will be space for unexpected transformations, and an infinity of chances to play, create and deconstruct.

BIOGRAPHY:
Judith Sánchez Ruíz | JSR Company was founded in 2010 in New York City, pursuing the creation of alternative contemporary dance and site-specific performances. The company has an interdisciplinary approach, through collaborations with composers as well as visual and media artists.
Judith Sánchez Ruíz conceptualizes the art of Improvisation into a complex subdue choreography. Her approach doesn’t rely on mechanization, or memory of movement, but on ramification and layering of subjects in composition.
‘Human casualness’, improvisation, community, and activism as well became an essential part of her work. With her latest piece “My breast on the table”, she is seeking to own space without the usual categorization of western appropriations, rewriting how she perceives choreography and performance today.
