River and Rail proudly presents Fun Home: a Tony Award-winning musical based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alison Bechdel, created by Lyricist Lisa Kron and Composer Jeanine Tesori.
This "tragicomic" (Bechdel's term) is a poignant story about growing up queer in rural Pennsylvania. With grown-up Alison as our guide, looking back on her childhood is an active journey forward; we experience the humor and depth of feeling in adolescent sexual self-discovery while simultaneously exhuming her father's untold story of queerness; a distant, troubled man who spent his life in the closet.
Fun Home has the haunting lyricism of memory, and the dramatic power of an artist walking through her past in real time. Alison artfully constructs a new version of her father’s life–searching for a truer story than the one she’s clung to.
At a time when Queerness in all its expressions is under attack by our state government, we are proud to present the first Broadway musical in history to feature a lesbian protagonist. Fun Home was created by composer Jeanine Tesori and writer and lyricist Lisa Kron–the first female writing team to win a Tony for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. Join us as we transform the Old City Performing Arts Center into the ornate Fun Home on Maple Avenue, June 2-18th!
