For the third offering of its 2023 season, the Australian Wind Symphony is excited to bring its panache and vibrance to Llewellyn Hall in Canberra. When curating events, Artistic Director Dr Geoff Grey showcases this world-renowned ensemble through the finest of large wind ensemble repertoire, trending to predominantly deliver works of living composers, and, in doing so, bringing over 80 world, Australian and regional premieres to the stage since its 2015 inception.
With ‘Fulminare!’, Latin for striking, this practice continues through offering a celebration of dynamic music, all by current writers, with the orchestra’s hallmark inclusion of new work premieres throughout.
The Australian premiere of Magen Miller’s ‘Jingo’ is the stimulating opener, with hard-driving ostinatos layered with soaring melodic lines providing concert guests with an upfront reminder of the excitement this large, contemporary classic ensemble brings to the national music landscape. The complexity of Dana Wilson’s haunting ‘To Set the Darkness Echoing’ follows, before the Wind Symphony invites us to reflect with a dedication by Australian Martyn Hancock in ‘Remembering a Friend (Hymn for Colin)’, featuring principal oboist Gina Pontoni. The first act concludes with Eric Whitacre’s infectious masterpiece ‘Equus’, Latin for horse, a moto perpetuo based on constant rhythms that, according to the composer, “start running and never stop”.
The second act commences with the seminal symphonic poem ‘Gloriosa’ (or Gururiyoza) from Japanese genre specialist Yasuhide Ito, a powerful three movement homage to the cross-cultural conflict and resolution of early Christian practices in Japan during the Edo era.
This striking event concludes with the buoyant finale of ‘Circus Ring’, showcasing Paul Hart’s spectacular depiction of the colours and character inherent in circus life.
